The Lone Ranger – Crawl Box Upgrade

After killing the 1350 crawl box on our trip (rear T-case loosened up because I forgot to lock-tite the bolt, guess I shouldn’t drink while wrenching), I needed to get something fixed quickly.

When the rear t-case came out of alignment, it put enough side load on the crawl box shift forks to kill the nylon that was there, and gave it some metal on metal contact. Eventually killing the fork and letting the box come out of gear:

So I looked at some diagrams and it looked like the 1354 electric shift fork might work in its place (the 1350-1354 guts are all interchangeable, so long as you swap everything). With nothing to lose at this point, I tore into the electric 1354 I had to see what’s what. And much to my surprise, the Electric junk will work just fine. So this is an easy to find upgrade for you folks running doublers as the electric 1354’s are everywhere.

1354 Electric case stuff on the Right, destroyed manual 1350 stuff on the left:

The big bonus of the upgrade is that you get go to from a 4 planetary gear set to 6. Not that I expected to destroy the 4 gear set, but hey, why not upgrade?:

Everything mocked up, it all looks like it’ll play happy together:

Now I just need to clean up everything, reseal the cases and life will be good again (I hope)
