Colorado 2018 – Granby area in the Mighty Merc. – Day 3

Today was the day. The boy has been talking about “Riding the Train in Colorado” at the Georgetown Loop. He was doing research of sorts by watching Thomas, Polar Express, and any other train movie/show he can non-stop. To say that he was a ball of excited energy was an understatement!

We started out by having breakfast at Sharky’s Eatery in Fraser CO. We wound up here more of than not for breakfast since they opened early and were pretty reasonable:

After filling up on food, we made a quick stop at the pass:

And kept rolling down the hill to Georgetown where the kids were thoroughly enjoying themselves with all the train stuff:

The ride down the hill was interesting. I did not realize that the entire line was recreated from scratch:

They do a “Train Robbery” on the way down the hill which was interesting with the kids. Thankfully my son handled it well. My daughter decided that she didn’t want to hand over the money and promptly hid it under her dress when the robbers came through! She also had the gall to check to make sure the coin they gave her was real as she took it and tried to bend it in her mouth like they do in the old westerns:

Riding back up the hill ticked off a thing on my bucket list. I’ve always wanted to ride a steam train running full bore (preferably at speed). While this one wasn’t moving that quick, it was definitely working heading up hill with more cars than normal and a full load. It was pretty cool to hear it chugging as hard as it was:

Once we were done with the train ride, we ran over the hill through the Ike tunnel to drop the girls off on the other side:

Once my wife and mom were at the outlet mall left to shop to their hearts content, Dad, the kids and myself headed out to the Keystone area to goof off for a bit on the trail out there:

The trail crisscrossed several ski areas around Keystone, some of them looked like they would be quite a bit of fun:

We went all the way up to the top where the mining remains were:

And made the kids run around a bit to burn of some energy:

The view back down the hill wasn’t bad either:

Once we were back down to Silverthorne, we collected the girls and headed back to get some sunset photos around Grand Lake:
