Explore the Devil’s Honeycomb on Hughes Mountain Natural Area in Potosi, MO

This hike is one of Missouri’s most unique. When I post photos from this spot online, people are often surprised to learn that such a place exists in Missouri. Now you can know about the unusual landscape and beautiful views from this easy and kid friendly hike. The trail’s main feature is the rock formation at the top known as Devil’s Honeycomb. The landscape was created as molten rock cracked and cooled. This same type of rock is what makes up Devil’s Tower in Wyoming.…

Shaw Nature Reserve in Gray Summit, Missouri

One of our favorite places to hike near St. Louis is the Shaw Nature Reserve. Only about 30 min from the city, it feels a world away. The Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis purchased the reserve land as a safe refuge for the plant collection from the smoke pollution of the 1920s. It has developed into a wonderful site to explore and view wildlife as well as view plants and habitat native to the Missouri region. The trails range from an easy paved stroll…

Rugged Beauty Awaits at Indiana’s Turkey Run State Park

If you follow us on Instagram (@midwestnomadfamily), you may have noticed that we did a little road trip to Indiana over the weekend. One of the highlights of our getaway was a visit to one of Indiana’s prettiest parks, Turkey Run in Marshall. The park has 11 different trails that wander through rugged ravines and along scenic Sugar Creek. A couple of the trails even involve scrambling up a series of ladders through a deep gorge. If there has been recent rainfall, you may be…

Colorado 2018 – Granby area in the Mighty Merc – Day 1

In the midst of building a house we were gifted with some free lodging in Granby, Colorado from my fantastic in-laws. So we got to have an impromptu vacation out west this year when we weren’t expecting to have one at all. Awesome. The Merc got a quick once over (bath and fluid change) and I ignored all the wore out things that I was hoping to get around to fixing prior to heading west again: While it seemed like we were taking less stuff…

Giant City State Park Nature Trail Hike 7-22-18

We broke away from the never ending projects that come with building a new house (another post on that later) to run down to Southern Illinois for a bit. We need to start getting the kids to hike on their own as they are both getting to be a bit too heavy for carry around these days. So we choose the Nature Trail at Giant City (PDF of Brochure)  :

    Klondike Park Hike 1-20-18

Augusta, MO After suffering a bit of cabin fever, the weather broke and allowed us to get out this past weekend for a bit of a hike. This was the boy’s first “Big Boy” hike and he managed to hike the full two miles all by himself. He had a few falls, but overall it went very well! We decided to head out to Klondike Park in St. Charles County. The park is unique in that is located on the site of an old silica…
