2011 WY/MT Trip – Day 5

Wednesday got a little screwed up. When walking out of the diner from breakfast, I noticed that the front wheels weren’t sitting ‘right’. I knew that one side had the ball joints going on it, but the other side should have been fine.

So I jacked it up and yup, both sides need Ball joints. This puts a wrinkle in things as I don’t really have a good way to swap those joints out, save for beating the crap out of it with a hammer. Not to mention, I don’t really want to do that involved of a job on vacation.

This lead to a bummer of a realization that no wheeling will happen on this trip. While that sucks, it doesn’t suck as much as having a knuckle come off while hanging out on the side of a mountain. When I left IL, these joints were used, but tight, so I don’t know why they’d decided to let go at this point in life.

So since I haven’t had the opportunity to lock in the front hubs (and looking like its not going to happen this trip). We decided to make a loop of this portion of the park by going up the “Going to the Sun” road.

It didn’t take long for us to run into road construction, which was the tune for the day:

Soon though, we were at Logans Pass, so we hiked the trail up there:

Our last stop for the day was Two Medicine. This area has a trick falls (When flowing at capacity, there is an upper and lower falls). Since its so dry here, only the lower fall was flowing.

2011 WY/MT Trip – Day 4

Tuesday

We put some serious miles in during one day, 479 miles to be exact traveling from Jackson WY to East Glacier in one shot:
Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

As you can see from the map, we did some running around Bozeman MT to try to find a caliper bracket in hopes of fixing my brake woes. Unfortunately, after calling and stopping by every parts store in town, I was out of luck. So off to Home Depot we went to gather supplies to MacGyver something together. In the end, I came up with a solution that seems to be holding up just fine. I’ll document that later on.

Unfortunately, when I jacked up the front to fix the brakes, I noticed that my lower ball joint was sloppy as heck on that side as well. So back to the parts stores we went to try to find ball joints and a ball joint press. Unfortunately, I struck out on the ball joint press. While I could just hammer the things out, I’d rather not do that, as with my luck I’d wind up bending the dang knuckle. So for now, the spare parts are just riding along.

We’d lost a lot of time running around Bozeman, so we had to abandon some more wheeling yet again (Monday/Tuesday were going to be our major wheeling days). We scrambled to make the best of it by running by some ghost towns.

On the way:

Our First Ghost town was Granite, the road up there wasn’t rough to traverse, mostly just a rock shelf road up to where the towns stood:

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Then we got to the ruins of the tramway:
Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

And into the town (not a whole lot left standing):

And back down we went:

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Our next Ghost town was Garnet, this town lived into the 1940’s before being abandoned which is part of the reason there were so many buildings still standing. The road up isn’t difficult, but it was very narrow and steep in some parts. It got a little interesting when you met a car head on:

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

After about 15 miles, we came to the town:

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Some of the buildings even had period ‘stuff’ inside as well:

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

More buildings:

On the hike back out from the town, we saw our first bear… Well bear cub anyway. Thankfully we didn’t see Mama:
Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

After we left Garnet, we went with the wind to get to East Glacier. The scenery kept getting nicer as we went north and got out of the ‘dry zone’:

On to Day 5

2011 WY/MT Trip – Day 3

We got an early start this morning to try to beat some of the crowds. Our first stop was Mammoth Springs near Gardiner.

Monday Travel:

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

From Mammoth Springs, we took Blacktrail Plateau Road to try to get off the beaten path some:
Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

We continued on toward the North East entrance to the park. The road on the way to that entrance is abundant with wildlife much to my wife’s happiness. Our first encounter was watching two young bulls duking it out in the middle of the road. We came in a little late to see several cars backing away form them as fast as they could.

Cars trying to scoot:
Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Lots of Buffalo and other animals:
Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Leaving the animals behind us, we were going to start hitting the more ‘off the beaten path’ areas around the park, starting with Lulu pass. Unfortunately this happened, again:
Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Yup, another dang key took flight. Thankfully, we were able to find it. Unfortunately this is putting a huge kink in our plans to stay off the beaten path. It appears that everything it too loose, and will work itself out in short order when traveling bumpy roads. Tomorrow, we’ll pass through some larger towns, and I’m crossing my fingers that I can MacGyver something up in the Home Depot parking lot to hold it all together. That is if Napa doesn’t have the parts I need (All ready tried the other parts stores in town with no luck).

So while this sucks, its not the end of our trip, it just means we’ve got to stick to paved roads (boo!). Hopefully I can get something going, otherwise it’ll be a huge disappointment to drive this thing all the way out here and not be able to play with it.

Since playing off road went off the agenda today, we took to the pavement and ran up Bear Tooth Highway for a bit. This is supposedly the “most scenic highway in the US”. I don’t know how the rated it as such, but it was a pretty drive.
Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

Sara L.: Ben WY / MT 2011 &emdash;

So that concludes today’s fun. If all works out tomorrow, I be able to rig something up to hold that caliper in place better, and we’ll get to go see some ghost towns.

On to Day 4
