Trail of the Week-Indiana’s Turkey Run State Park

Trail of the Week-Indiana’s Turkey Run State Park

If you follow us on Instagram (@midwestnomadfamily), you may have noticed that we did a little road trip to Indiana over the weekend. One of the highlights of our getaway was a visit to one of Indiana’s prettiest parks, Turkey Run in Marshall. The park has 11 different trails that wander through rugged ravines and along scenic Sugar Creek. A couple of the trails even involve scrambling up a series of ladders through a deep gorge. If there has been…

The Mighty Merc – 8th ORT at Flat Nasty Off-Road 12/1/18

The Mighty Merc – 8th ORT at Flat Nasty Off-Road 12/1/18

With a little goading from my internet friends, I made the trek down to Flat Nasty with another friend riding shotgun whom had never been off-roading before. It was great to meet up with a group of people that I have only spoken with online and it wise nice to be around people that have a similar philosophy in off-roading. There was definitely a bit of a mind warp so see so many pretty full sized trucks the mix. Unfortunately…

Colorado 2018 – Granby area in the Mighty Merc. – Day 8

Not much to look at on this one as it was just a long road day driving from Granby to St. Louis in one shot. Things went pretty well on the way back, we managed to sneak out early enough to miss Denver morning rush hour, the wind in Kansas was tolerable, and I finally managed to find a way to sit in the truck for long stretches without it killing my back (I really need a new driver’s seat…

Colorado 2018 – Granby area in the Mighty Merc. – Day 7

Day 7 saw my folks departing heading back to the St. Louis area. So we loaded up to do a bit more hiking with the kids to try and break up the day knowing that there was another 18 hour car ride ahead of us the next day. We found a Fox Friend as we were leaving the condo: And headed over to St. Mary Lake trail to see the glacier: The kids actually managed to hike the whole way…

Colorado 2018 – Granby area in the Mighty Merc. – Day 6

Day 6 saw us grabbing breakfast and heading out to hike the trail to Broome Hut on the Second Creek Trail (N137) near the divide. The kids (and adults) started out pretty well: But it wasn’t long before they wound up in the packs: The hut at the top was pretty impressive. I’d really like to stay there one day as I bet it would be cool to see the stars out there at night: After getting the kids to…

Colorado 2018 – Granby area in the Mighty Merc. – Day 5

Day 5 found us kid free for a bit as the kids headed off to a playground with Nana and Papa. So the wife and I had some time to hike a bit further than we usually can with kids strapped to our backs. So we grabbed a quick breakfast and ran up to the town of Grand Lake to grab some sunrise photos: After that we rolled back into the park to see what we could see, hoping to…

Colorado 2018 – Granby area in the Mighty Merc. – Day 4

The wife wanted to get some sunrise photos at Grand Lake before heading out to the trail we wanted to do. So we woke the kids up, stuffed them in the Merc, and rolled out getting to the lake just in time: The kids enjoyed playing around on the rocks while Mommy was taking her photos: While we were wandering back to the truck I asked my wife if she had been paying attention to the tracks in the mud….

Colorado 2018 – Granby area in the Mighty Merc. – Day 3

Today was the day. The boy has been talking about “Riding the Train in Colorado” at the Georgetown Loop. He was doing research of sorts by watching Thomas, Polar Express, and any other train movie/show he can non-stop. To say that he was a ball of excited energy was an understatement! We started out by having breakfast at Sharky’s Eatery in Fraser CO. We wound up here more of than not for breakfast since they opened early and were pretty…
