The Cannonball Jail

Your first stop in town has to be the Cannonball Jail. Built in 1869, this incredible structure has walls literally constructed from cannonballs! This makes this jail one of the most unusual historic buildings you’ll find anywhere in Illinois. It served as the county jail for decades and today has been repurposed as the town’s free welcome center and visitor stop.

Step inside to learn about the town’s history and grab a map of over 30 historical sites to explore around town. Don’t miss the fun photo op behind bars. Signs are provided for fun photo opportunities behind bars and there is plenty of historical information to read as you explore. Right outside you’ll find a giant Route 66 shield that makes for the perfect photo op before heading across the street.

The Million Dollar Courthouse

Just across the street from the Cannonball Jail is the Macoupin County Courthouse, known locally as the Million Dollar Courthouse. It earned that nickname because it cost 1.3 million dollars to build in the 1870s. This was an extraordinary amount of money at the time and actually caused quite a controversy among local residents.

This stunning building is still a functional courthouse that towers over the whole downtown. If court is not in session you can walk inside and stand beneath the magnificent dome and take in the many elaborate details. Another fun fact about this structure is that it is widely considered the first fireproof building in the United States with the doors, staircases, windows sills and sashes all made of cast iron.

The Sears Homes Neighborhood

Carlinville is home to the largest collection of Sears catalog homes in the United States. In the early 1900s, over 150 prefabricated homes were ordered directly from a Sears catalog and assembled right here in Carlinville. While the homes are privately owned and some show their age, driving through the neighborhood is a genuinely interesting slice of American history worth a quick detour.

Just minutes outside of town is Beaver Dam State Park . This is one of the most underrated hidden gem parks in all of Illinois and a great place to explore. This beautiful park offers peaceful, kid-friendly hiking trails that wind around a lake and through a stunning wetlands area.

One Day Itinerary for Carlinville

Here is how we’d suggest spending a perfect day in Carlinville:

Morning — Start with coffee and breakfast at The Hawthorn Tree or grab a quick coffee from Sips before diving into your day.

Mid-Morning — Head straight to the Cannonball Jail to explore the welcome center, grab a map of historical sites, and snap your photo op behind bars. Then cross the street to admire the Million Dollar Courthouse and step inside if court is not in session. Don’t forget to pose by the Route 66 shield outside and look for the Route 66 murals as you explore.

Late Morning — Wander through the downtown square and pop into the local boutiques. My Sister’s Closet, Collected Boutique, Brave Hazel, and 1917 Home & Decor are all worth a browse.
