Best Things to Do in Jefferson City, Missouri: A Family Guide to Missouri’s Capital City

I was born in Missouri, and somehow it took me until now to finally visit Jefferson City. After spending a weekend exploring Missouri’s capital, I cannot believe we waited this long! Jefferson City surprised us in the best way with its mix of history, outdoor adventure, local restaurants, beautiful parks, and one of the most stunning buildings we have seen in Missouri.

If you are planning a Missouri road trip or looking for a Midwest weekend getaway, here are the best things to do in Jefferson City.

Where is Jefferson City?

Jefferson City sits on the bluffs of the Missouri River near the geographic center of Missouri, right off of I-70. It is about two hours from St. Louis, two and a half hours from Kansas City, and about 30 minutes from Columbia. Jefferson City also sits along the famous Katy Trail, the longest rail-to-trail conversion in the country, stretching 240 miles across Missouri along the banks of the Missouri River.

Best Indoor Things to Do in Jefferson City

Whether you wish to escape the heat or visit on a rainy or cold weather day, there are plenty of museums and indoor attractions to visit in Jefferson City. Best of all, many of them are completely free!

The Missouri State Capitol

The Missouri State Capitol is one of the most beautiful buildings we have ever seen in Missouri. Completed in 1917 and built from native Missouri marble, the dome rises 262 feet above the basement floor. The outside and grounds of the capitol include fountains and statues. This is truly the centerpiece of downtown Jefferson City.

We took the free guided tour and it was absolutely worth every minute. The tour gave us access to rooms and murals that are not open to the general public, and it made us appreciate the building so much more.

One of the highlights is seeing the famous Thomas Hart Benton murals. His “Social History of Missouri” mural is bold, detailed, and full of Missouri stories. There is so much history packed into this building, and even my kids were impressed by how beautiful it was.

The building is filled with sculptures, stained glass, and public art that make it one of the most impressive state capitols in the entire country. I would recommend the tour more for elementary aged and up kids and adults since there is a lot of history to absorb, but it is genuinely fascinating. One thing my kids absolutely loved is that the floor and wall tiles throughout the building contain fossils! This made it a fun scavenger hunt for the kids.

You can also visit the Missouri State Museum inside the Capitol, which is completely free. It is a great stop for learning more about Missouri history, government, natural resources, and culture. Many of the displays are interactive, making this a great stop for kids of all ages.

Don’t miss exploring the Capitol grounds either as there are fountains, a Liberty Bell Memorial, a Law Enforcement Memorial, Veterans Memorial, and a Louisiana Purchase Treaty Monument.

Missouri State Penitentiary

The Missouri State Penitentiary is one of the most historically significant and fascinating stops in Jefferson City. This prison operated for 168 years before closing in 2004 and carries an extraordinary and complex history, including being called “the bloodiest 47 acres in America” by Time magazine in 1967. Notable inmates included Emma Goldman and James Earl Ray.

We took an evening guided tour and the nighttime atmosphere makes an already sobering experience even more intense and memorable. Our guide did an excellent job presenting the history thoughtfully, including stories of inmates who turned their lives around and how conditions changed over the decades.

I recommend this for older kids and adults since some of the stories are pretty heavy, but our guide kept it appropriate for families. Book in advance as tours sell out, especially on weekends. Visit the Missouri State Penitentiary website for tour options and pricing.

Runge Conservation Nature Center

Runge Conservation Nature Center is completely free and a must see spot. Managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation, this site contains outdoor trails and a free and incredible nature center to explore inside.

Inside the nature center you can find hands-on displays on the animals, plants, and habitats throughout Missouri. There are play areas for kids and live reptiles and fish to view. The center also does many special events and has a scavenger hunt for kids.

Browse the Downtown Shops

Jefferson City has a charming downtown area filled with shops and restaurants. The Curious Turtle is an adorable kids book store with toys and games as well. There are also many boutiques and gift shops to wander through.

Best Outdoor Things to Do in Jefferson City

We were pleasantly surprised at the wonderful parks, trails, and playgrounds we discovered around Jefferson City. Bring your walking shoes and don’t miss exploring these amazing attractions in the great outdoors.

Community Park

We kicked off our visit at Community Park and were immediately impressed. This is a massive park with one of the biggest and most creative climbing structures we have seen. There is even a splash pad that is perfect on a warm day. The park also connects directly to the city greenway trail system, making it a great launching point for exploring Jefferson City on foot or by bike. Visit the Jefferson City Parks website for details.

Deborah Cooper Park on Adrian’s Island

This might have been one of our favorite surprises of the entire trip. Deborah Cooper Park sits on a 32-acre island along the Missouri River and is connected to downtown and the Missouri State Capitol complex by the Bicentennial pedestrian and bike bridge. The walk across the bridge alone is worth the trip, with stunning views of the Capitol dome on one side and the Missouri River on the other.

Once you arrive to the island, you will find hammocks to relax in, a life-size chess board, beautiful public art installations, paved paths, and nature trails. Don’t miss the Missouri-shaped sculpture and an oversized photo frame.

We saw deer everywhere, more rabbits than we could count, and caught some of the best views of the Capitol you will find anywhere in the city. The sunrise from the bridge is especially stunning.

Runge Conservation Nature Center

While the indoor nature center at Runge is amazing, don’t miss exploring the conservation center’s miles of paved and unpaved trails. The outdoor trails wind through beautiful natural habitats and we saw an incredible variety of wildlife including deer, turtles, multiple species of birds, a wild turkey, and even a snake.

The centerpiece of the trail system is a fire tower you can actually climb for sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. Our whole family loved this place!

Lewis and Clark Trailhead Plaza

Just half a block east of the Capitol at the corner of Capitol Avenue and Jefferson Street, the Lewis and Clark Trailhead Plaza is a beautiful free stop. Dedicated in 2008, it features a five-figure bronze sculpture depicting Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, York, interpreter George Drouillard, and Lewis’s Newfoundland dog Seaman. The monument includes interpretive signage commemorating the June 4, 1804 encampment of the Corps of Discovery in this area.

Carnahan Memorial Garden

Located at 101 Jefferson Street just below the Missouri Governor’s Mansion, the Carnahan Memorial Garden is a beautiful sunken garden featuring reflection pools, flower beds, terraced walkways, and a pergola with stunning views of the Capitol. The garden was started in the late 1930s and later renamed in memory of Governor Mel Carnahan. It is free, open to the public, and one of the most photogenic spots in Jefferson City.

Binder Park

After a long day of exploring we loved winding down with an evening at Binder Park. This is a well-maintained community park with plenty of green space, a lake, playgrounds, and a relaxed atmosphere perfect for families. A great spot to end a busy day of sightseeing.

Centennial Park

This small park is located where the old, historic bridge once stood to cross the Missouri River. There are information signs to learn the history behind Jefferson City’s first river bridge, the Millbottom business district, and the surrounding residential community. It’s also a great spot for train watching as the tracks pass right below the lookout point.

The Katy Trail and City Greenway

Jefferson City sits right along the Katy Trail, which stretches 240 miles across Missouri along the Missouri River. The city also has an impressive greenway system connecting parks, the riverfront, and neighborhoods throughout the city. We wished we had brought our bikes on this trip. Visit the Katy Trail State Park website for more information.

Where to Eat in Jefferson City

Jefferson City has a variety of dining options from a casual diner to a more formal dinner time spot. We had a hard time narrowing down which spots to try, but these are the restaurants we enjoyed for our two day trip.

The Landing Zone

For our last morning we discovered what might be our favorite unexpected food find of the trip. The Landing Zone is a restaurant on the second floor of the Jefferson City Memorial Airport with walls of picture windows overlooking the runway. You can watch small planes take off and land while you eat scratch-made breakfast using locally sourced ingredients. The whole experience is genuinely fun and unique.

Prison Brews

Prison Brews is a Jefferson City staple and the perfect dinner stop before or after your Missouri State Penitentiary tour. This restaurant is located two blocks from the old penitentiary in a historic 1895 brick warehouse with jail themed decor including cell-like booths, iron bars, and prison themed stained glass. The menu features American comfort food and don’t miss trying the hand brewed root beer.

Oscar’s Classic Diner

Oscar’s Classic Diner is exactly what you want from a classic diner with friendly service and down home cooking. A perfect breakfast spot before a full day of exploring.

West Main Pizza

West Main Pizza is a locally owned scratch-made pizza spot with fresh ingredients and house-made dough. The lunch specials here are great with salad and pizza combos available.

Madison’s Cafe

Madison’s Cafe is located in the heart of historic downtown and housed in a building that is a designated historic landmark. Madison’s serves a wonderful blend of fine American and Italian cuisine.

Central Dairy

No trip to Jefferson City is complete without a stop at Central Dairy, a Jefferson City tradition since the 1930s. This iconic ice cream parlor has a beautiful retro interior with over 40 flavors made fresh on site. The prices here are great and the lines move quickly even on a busy weekend.

Yo Yums

After exploring downtown we could not resist stopping at Yo Yums for frozen yogurt with all the toppings. Located right in the heart of downtown, it is the perfect sweet stop on a warm afternoon.

Where to Stay in Jefferson City

We stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott downtown and it was the perfect home base for the trip. The location put us within minutes of the Capitol, the riverfront, downtown restaurants, and most of the attractions we visited. The rooms were spacious and quiet and make a great spot for any traveler to the city.

The Jefferson Landing State Historic Site in Jefferson City is currently closed for renovations through October 16, 2026. When it reopens, it is worth adding to your itinerary for its 1839 Lohman Building depicting an 1850s general store and warehouse, and the Elizabeth Rozier Gallery with rotating exhibits on Missouri history, art, and culture. Check the Missouri State Parks website for current status before visiting.
