Exploring Illinois’s Giant City State Park

Giant City is one of the most beautiful state parks in Illinois with amazing trails past towering rock formations, shelter caves, and wet-weather waterfalls. Just minutes from Carbondale, Illinois, the park is a must-visit destination for outdoor adventurers, history lovers, and anyone looking for a scenic weekend getaway in Southern Illinois. The park also offers many amenities including a great Visitor Center with interactive exhibits for kids, a stunning CCC era lodge with restaurant, plus cabins and campground for an extended stay.

History of Giant City State Park

Giant City State Park was established in the 1920s and is named for the massive sandstone formations that resemble the “streets” of a giant city. The park was first home to Native American cultures who used some of the natural features as shelters.

During the Great Depression, The park was developed in part by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Many of their original stone structures still stand today including the beautiful Giant City Lodge. With a rich cultural and geological history, the park offers visitors the chance to connect with both nature and the past.

This park is such a wonderful place to explore in all seasons. Spring brings stunning wildflowers and wet-weather waterfalls. While summer can be hot and humid, most of the trails are shaded and the rocks provide a slightly cooler place to explore. Fall is my favorite with stunning fall foliage contrasting with the towering rock bluffs. We have even enjoyed hiking in winter. Freezing temperatures bring dramatic icicle formations and you are likely to have the trail almost to yourself!

Hiking Trails

The park is best known for its incredible hiking trails, which wind through canyons, bluffs, and lush forests. Whether you’re looking for an easy family walk or a longer backcountry trek, there’s a trail for everyone. We have hiked most of the trails at Giant City and have full guides for our favorite hiking trails.

Giant City Nature Trail

The most popular hike, the Giant City Nature Trail, is a 1-mile loop that takes visitors past towering sandstone formations known as the “streets” of the giants. If you only hike one trail in the park, this is the one to choose! The narrow passageways and massive rocks make it a favorite for families, photographers, and anyone wanting to see the park’s namesake features.

This trail is easy to moderate. Most of the path is wide and gravel with a section of boardwalk. There is a short section of climbing through a rock passageway and a few short, uphill treks along the way.

Devil’s Standtable

A short trail with a big payoff, Giant City’s Devil’s Standtable path showcases a striking sandstone pillar sculpted by centuries of erosion. This 0.3 mile loop also passes along a large shelter cave. My kids love climbing the rocks within the cave. This trail is located near the Giant City Nature Trailhead so we often hike these two trails together when we visit.

This trail is also a popular rock climbing area. Just to the left of the shelter cave you may see groups tackling the cliff up the bluffs.

Indian Creek Nature Trail

The 0.75-mile Indian Creek Nature Trail loop winds through hardwood forests and crossing streams over several bridges. The trail also passes a large shelter cave that was used by Native Americans. During the spring or after a good rain you may see seasonal waterfalls trickling down from the bluff.

Trillium Trail

The Giant City Trillium Trail is a moderate 2-mile hike that’s especially stunning in spring when wildflowers bloom across the forest floor. You will feel like you have stepped into a fairy forest with towering rock bluffs and carpets of stunning blooms. I highly recommend this hike in April for a stunning experience.

Post Oak Trail

A short, paved 1/3-mile loop, the Giant City Post Oak Trail is wheelchair-accessible and perfect for families with young kids or anyone seeking an easy stroll through the park. The paved portion passes along the bluff line with a fence, but the trees do limit the view. You can leave the paved pathway to continue along the bluff for better views of the rock formations, but use caution.

The playground was constructed in memory of a boy who loved Dungeons and Dragons. The park is privately owned, but open for the public to enjoy and celebrate his memory. This is one of the most impressive playgrounds I have ever seen with so many details including hidden passageways and a massive dragon statue.
