The Mighty Merc – Steering Shaft Hacking
After removing the IFS, and hacking in a traditional steering box, I needed to come up with a way to connect the box to the column. After a little trial and error, I wound up hacking the IFS steering shaft up some and placing a Borgeson Universal on the end. The part number to match up with the Ford box that I am using is 013464, which has a ¾”-36 spline on one side and a smooth bore ¾” on the other.
This was pretty straight forward. Lop off the end of the IFS shaft, put the Borgeson joint on the end, align your box to your column, and weld!
When installed, this gives me about 2” of travel before the column is completely collapsed, so I’m happy with that:
