Ultimate Guide to the Best Midwest Fall Getaways

Fall is my favorite time of year in the Midwest. The cooler weather, lack of humidity, and vibrant fall foliage create the perfect backdrop for planning an incredible Midwest fall getaway. Whether you’re seeking scenic fall drives, outdoor adventures, or charming small towns, the Midwest offers an abundance of amazing fall weekend destinations. From the serene lakeshores of the Great Lakes states to the rugged hills of South Dakota, here are my top 12 best Midwest fall escapes you won’t want to miss.

1. Missouri’s Acadia Valley

The Acadia Valley area of Missouri might be my favorite in the state. Perfect for those who love outdoor adventure, this peaceful and rugged area in southeastern Missouri is home to multiple state parks and conservation areas that make a great Missouri fall road trip. There are also several small towns with charming shops and restaurants to visit.

What to Do

Hiking Trails
Elephant Rocks State Park might be the most fun Missouri state park in the state. An easy and paved one-mile trail leads around giant granite boulders lined up like massive elephants. Both kids and adults will love scrambling up and over these rocks or posing for the scenic selfies. Don’t miss the detour spur to see the ruins of the old engine house!

Not far from Elephant Rocks is Johnson’s Shut-ins State Park. While this park is busy in summer with visitors swimming in the scenic river shut-ins, fall brings a quieter visit with stunning views and foliage. An accessible path and boardwalk lead to an overview of the shut-ins, making this one of the most beautiful Midwest state parks.

Other great hikes in the area include Hughes Mountain with the unique Devil’s Honeycomb formations, and Taum Sauk Mountain where you can hike to Missouri’s tallest wet weather waterfall. Don’t miss the view from the old fire tower at Taum Sauk for a birds-eye view of the fall colors.

Historic Stops
Be sure to stop in at Pilot Knob State Historic Site to learn all about the Civil War Battle that once occurred here. The courthouse downtown even still bears the mark from a cannonball!

Where to Eat
Start your morning with coffee and breakfast at the Station at Sawyer’s Landing, once home to an old Forest Ranger Station. They even have a treehouse for kids to play! When you get hungry for lunch or dinner, head to the historic and beautiful Arcadia Academy for made from scratch meals and incredible homemade bread at Thee Abbey Kitchen. Baylee Jo’s BBQ is another family favorite. Follow up your visit with ice cream and candy while taking a trip back in time to the Old Village Mercantile in the tiny hamlet of Caledonia.

Where to Stay
For a unique lodging experience, check out Sunset at the Silos for a night in a converted grain bin. Our family loved our stay in the family-friendly Lookout unit. Another great place is Sawyer’s Landing. We had a peaceful stay in a cabin on the property and were able to walk right over to the Station (mentioned above) for breakfast.

2. Shawnee National Forest

You will forget any idea you had that Illinois was only cornfields when you travel to the scenic Shawnee National Forest as the very southern part of the state. We make regular trips to this area as it is home to some of the best views and hikes in Illinois, making it one of the best Midwest fall getaways.

What to Do

Hiking Trails
There are many amazing hiking trails in Shawnee National Forest but Garden of the Gods is the most popular for a reason. The short Observation Trail leads to incredible views of impressive rock formations. I especially love this spot at sunset! If you want a quieter hike, the Indian Point Trail is also a wonderful fall hike.

Other great trails to explore in the area include Rim Rock, Bell Smith Springs, Little Grand Canyon, Cave-in-Rock, and Giant City State Park. If you can time your visit to right after a good rain, you can find many several waterfalls at Ferne Clyffe and Jackson Falls. If bike trails are more your speed, but sure to check out Tunnel Hill State Trail with a historic railroad tunnel and multiple trestles.

Where to Eat
The Lodge at Giant City is a must for a delicious fried chicken dinner. Closer to the central part of the forest you can find Shotgun Eddy’s or the Vault Cafe in Marion. The newly reopened Red Onion is a hidden gem closer to Garden of the Gods. Don’t miss stopping at The Garden of the Gods Outpost near Garden of the Gods for an ice cream treat. Shawnee National Forest should be on everyone’s Midwest fall bucket list.

Where to Stay
There are endless cozy cabins and rentals in Shawnee National Forest. For a couples getaway, check out the unique glamping domes at Shawnee Hills Glamping. Our family also loved the adorable A-frame cabins at the Sunrise Hill Cabins and the extra space and peacefulness at Songbird Lane Cabin.

3. Minnesota’s North Shore

Stretching along Lake Superior, Minnesota’s North Shore is a fall foliage haven. The scenic drive along Highway 61 reveals vibrant forests, rugged cliffs, and expansive lake views. Our family had an amazing time visiting during early fall and this still ranks as one of the most scenic road trips we have ever taken.

What to Do

Hiking Trails
Minnesota’s North Shore is filled with endless waterfalls and incredible hikes making it one of the best Midwest Fall getaways. A few favorites include Gooseberry Falls State Park with incredible waterfalls, Oberg Mountain with an impressive mountain top view, and Shovel Point Trail at Tettegouche State Park.

Scenic Gondola
Lutsen Mountain is located just off the main highway but is worth the detour. This mountain resort offers traditional winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling. A must do for fall, the resort offers a gondola and alpine slide. Both of these attractions are not cheap, but the views of stunning fall colors from atop Lutsen mountain are worth the cost!

Charming towns and more
Other must-see spots along the North Shore include the historic Split Rock Lighthouse or exploring the unique Black Beach in Silver Bay. Don’t miss a fun ride on the North Shore Scenic Railway in downtown Duluth! The charming towns of Lutsen, Grand Marais, and Two Harbors are perfect for shopping, dining, and experiencing local art scenes.

4. South Dakota’s Black Hills

Our family took a long road trip through South Dakota’s Black Hills and it was such an amazing trip with so much to see and do. The landscape here is striking with towering rock spires, dense forests, and winding roads that area fun to drive.

What to Do

Hiking Trails
There are endless trails to explore in this region that offer wonderful views and fall foliage. If you want an easy walk, check out Sylvan or Horsethief Lake with lake views and easy pathways. For more of a challenge, the Cathedral Spires trails is one of the best in Custer State Park.

Out of all the hikes we did in South Dakota, I would have to say the more challenging Sunday Gulch Trail is my all time favorite. This hike involves a scramble up or down rocks to explore a scenic gorge.

Scenic Drives
The Black Hills of South Dakota are filled with scenic drive options. Be sure to hit the road and explore the Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road, and the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway. The Spearfish Scenic Byway offers one of the best fall color drives in the region. Be sure to stop at Spearfish Falls and Roughlock Falls along the way.

5. Door County Wisconsin

When it comes to lakeside fall escapes, Door County stands out as a top destination. Known as the “Cape Cod of the Midwest,” this northern Wisconsin peninsula offers stunning views of Lake Michigan framed by vibrant fall foliage. The charming towns of Sturgeon Bay, Fish Creek, and Ephraim are perfect for leisurely strolls, boutique shopping, and delicious dining.

What to Do

Outdoor Adventures
Hit the trail at Peninsula State Park for sweeping lake views and stunning fall leaves. The Eagle Trail is a moderate 2 mile loop through the trees, along the bluffs, and down to the waters edge. Peninsula State Park also has a newer and impressive observation tower that offers dramatic lake views.

Another great Door County hiking spot is the Ridges Sanctuary in Bailey’s Harbor. This sanctuary contains several miles of trails including an ADA accessible boardwalk. The trails pass through a boreal forest, ridges, swales, and colorful flora. Don’t miss seeing the historic range lights that safely guided boats through to the harbor and the large nature center with interactive exhibits.

If you prefer to explore by water, try taking a kayaking trip. There are multiple tours to explore the clear blue waters. Our family of four had a wonderful time viewing the cliffs and caves in Door County by kayaking to Cave Point with Peninsula Kayaking Company. Several companies do offer kayak tours through mid-October, weather permitting.

Lighthouses
Door County is home the greatest concentration of lighthouses in the county, with 11 different lighthouses in just one county. While most of closed to the public, there are a few available for public viewing and to even climb inside. The Cana Island Lighthouse is Door County’s most photographed lighthouse with tours available to climb to the top. (Tip: This is also a great spot to watch a sunrise!) The Eagle Bluff Lighthouse is located in Peninsula State Park with a scenic view from atop the bluff and buildings to explore. You can learn more about the lighthouses in Door County at the Door County Maritime Museum.

Ride the Ferry to Washington Island
One of our favorite Door County experiences is taking the scenic ferry ride to Washington Island off the northern shore of the peninsula. The ferry from Door County to Washington Island offers a relaxing journey across the Death’s Door Passage of Lake Michigan with views of two lighthouses along the way. When you reach the island, you can explore the rare white pebbles at Schoolhouse Beach.

6. Great River Road

Following the path of the mighty Mississippi River, the Great River Road is one of the most scenic fall drives in the Midwest. While the full route spans ten states, the stretch between Alton and Grafton, Illinois is a true hidden gem in autumn. This area offers vibrant foliage, dramatic river bluffs, and a surprising number of outdoor activities perfect for a fall weekend escape.

What to Do

Scenic Drives
This stretch of the Great River Road is known as the Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway. The road hugs the Mississippi River and winds beneath soaring limestone bluffs covered in stunning fall color. Don’t miss taking a detour through the tiny and historic village of Elsah. To extend your drive, make the scenic road loop through Pere Marquette State Park or take the Grafton Ferry over to Calhoun County for more scenic backroads exploring.

Hiking Trails
There are several trails in the area for all skill levels. Just north of Grafton you can find Pere Marquette State Park. This stunning park features miles of trails through forested hillsides with panoramic views of the river and surrounding valleys. I recommend taking the Goat Cliff or Ravine Trail to McAdams Peak for a great view of the river and fall colors before stopping to eat at meal at the historic lodge.

Another great hiking spot is just off the byway. The Nature Institute’s Olin Nature Preserve has a mix of paved and unpaved trails plus a nature playground, making this a great spot for all ages to explore. Don’t miss the overlook near the Skeet Towers for a great view of the Great River Road far below.

More Activities
For a unique perspective of the fall colors, take the Grafton SkyTour chair lift up the bluff or cruise down the alpine slide at Aerie’s Resort. Grafton also offers cozy local shops, and riverfront dining at the Loading Dock. If you want an overnight stay, check out the lodge at Pere Marquette State Park.

7. Hocking Hills, Ohio

Nestled in southeastern Ohio, Hocking Hills is renowned for its dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and dense forests. Our family was blown away when we visited this part of the state and it reminded us of a mini Smoky Mountains. Hocking Hills is an ideal spot for outdoor lovers, photographers, and anyone looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Ohio’s forests during the fall season.

What to Do

Hiking Trails
Hocking Hills State Park offers miles of hiking trails from easy and flat paths to more rugged longer treks. Ash Cave might be one of the shortest and easiest hikes, but it offers a dramatic view of a large cave and wet-weather waterfall. Cedar Falls and Conkle’s Hollow are two other short but sweet trails with views of a rushing waterfall and dramatic canyons. The Old Man’s Cave hike is the most popular in the Hocking Hills for good reason. This is one of the most scenic trails in the entire Midwest as the trail winds past waterfalls, gorges, caves, and unique bridges.

More Adventures
The Hocking Hills also offers more activities other just than hiking. The curving roads offer several scenic road tours. There are also canopy and zipline tours. Kids may enjoy the mini-golf options, the AHA Children’s Museum, or seeing the farm animals at Muddy Boots or Fox’s High Ridge Farm. The Hocking Hills Scenic Railway is extra stunning during the fall.

Where to Stay
Our family loved staying in a luxury cabin with Rewild Rentals. The homes are beautiful and tucked away in the woods for a secluded and peaceful stay.

8. Branson, Missouri

Known for its live entertainment and family-friendly attractions, Branson also shines in the fall. The colorful leaves provide a stunning backdrop to shows, outdoor activities, and shopping.

What to Do

Silver Dollar City is constantly voted as America’s best theme park and fall is the perfect time to visit. The colorful leaves provide a scenic backdrop to the Harvest Festival activities including special shows, delicious food items, and special family activities. Don’t miss a ride on the train!

The Shepherd of the Hills Adventure Park also offers a special pumpkin fest in the fall with hayrides, treetop trail, farm animals, slides, bounce house, treehouse, mini-golf, photo ops, and so much more. New this year is a special evening Pumpkin’s Aglow night time walk. Don’t miss riding the mountain coaster or checking out the view from the Inspiration Tower.

Outdoor Nature Spots
Explore by foot, bike, or tram at Dogwood Canyon Nature Park which has 10,000 acres of rugged beauty and waterfalls. One of our family’s favorite adventures in Branson is taking a golf cart tour at Top of the Rock. This 2.5 mile path was created to highlight rock formations, waterfalls, and scenic views. It even goes through a tunnel and a cave!

Where to Stay
There is no shortage of great places to stay in Branson, and we have tried quite a few! If you want something more unique, try staying in a covered wagon at Sycamore Creek Ranch. For a more traditional hotel feel but with a cool retro vibe, check out the revamped Ozarker Lodge. If your family wants a more space and activities the properties of Branson Family Retreats and Serenity Shores offer large, luxury home rentals plus pools and great amenities.

9. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a hidden gem for fall lovers. The region’s dense forests and rugged coastline burst into a vibrant display of colors every autumn. It’s a great destination for outdoor adventures, with fewer crowds than more popular spots. Our family visited in late September a few years ago and it was one of our favorite road trips.

What to Do

Porcupine Mountains
The Upper Peninsula has amazing hikes to complete in the fall. We especially loved exploring Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Sunrise at Lake of the Clouds overlook and trail is not to be missed. The Presque Isle Falls Loop offers views of multiple waterfalls while the Summit Peak Observation Tower offers amazing fall color views.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is an incredible area to explore during fall. There are multiple waterfalls here that can reached on short hikes including Munising Falls, Miners Falls, and Sable Falls. Don’t miss taking in the views from the Miners Castle Overlook or the Log Slide. If you like to learn about maritime history, a walk to the Au Sable Lighthouse is well worth he trek. To see the pictured rocks formations from the water, consider taking a boat or kayaking tour for incredible and unique vistas.

More Outdoor Adventures
Don’t miss taking a trip to Tahquamenon Falls State Park, home to one of the largest waterfalls in the eastern U.S. The park includes views of the both the upper and lower falls and even a boardwalk bridge that leads to an island.

10. Parke County, Indiana

Nestled in the heart of Indiana, Parke County is renowned as the “Covered Bridge Capital of the World,” Fall is the most enchanting time to experience the charm of over 30 historic covered bridges in this one county. The county also hosts the famous Parke County Covered Bridge Festival in October, where you can enjoy craft vendors, live entertainment, and delicious local foods. Don’t miss exploring the charming town of Rockville, which gives Hallmark village vibes.

What to Do

Covered Bridge Scenic Drives
Parke County offers driving tour maps to plan a route to see the many covered bridges. Some bridges can be driven over while others are only open for pedestrian use. One of my personal favorites is the Bridgeton Covered Bridge. This long covered bridge crosses over a dam right next to a mill that has been griding wheat and corn since 1823!

Hiking Trails
Parke County is home the incredible Turkey Run State Park. One of the most rugged and beautiful park sin the Midwest, Turkey Run offers sandstone gorges and wet weather waterfalls. The iconic Trail 3 is one of the most popular routes, taking visitors through dramatic ravines, over fallen logs, and alongside rushing streams. There are even ladders to climb for those brave enough for the adventure!

Turkey Run State Park also has a beautiful lodge and cabins that offer a great place to stay for a weekend.

11. Medora, North Dakota

For a destination more off the beaten path, check out Medora, North Dakota. This charming prairie town that truly comes alive during the fall season.

What to Do

Theodore Roosevelt National Park
One of the top experiences during autumn is exploring Theodore Roosevelt National Park. This peaceful spot has all the grand National Park views without the big crowds. Our family loved checking out the overlooks and hiking trails, especially at sunset. You may even be fortunate to see the herds of bison or wild horses.

Explore Medora
The historic downtown is home to charming boutique shops and quaint eateries. Our kids also loved the unique Children’s Park with a western themed false front town and a section that looks like an Old West fort.

Fall is also the perfect time to attend the Medora Musical, an iconic outdoor show that celebrates Western heritage with talented performances and lively music. Our family ran out of time for this show, but hope to try it out next time!

12. Pella, Iowa

A slice of the Netherlands in the heart of Iowa, Pella offers a unique and picturesque fall escape. Known for its Dutch-inspired architecture, and peaceful countryside setting, our family absolutely adored exploring this charming small town. While spring is the most popular time to visit during the Tulip festival, fall brings a more peaceful escape.

What to Do

Scenic Drive

Take a leisurely drive around Lake Red Rock, Iowa’s largest lake for photo ops and a stop at The Cordova Park Observation Tower for a panoramic view of the lake and the surrounding foliage. The parks and beaches around the lake offer the perfect spot to watch a sunset.

Hikes

The Lake Red Rock Trail System offers a variety of hiking trails around the woods and lake. The 17-mile Volksweg Trail system is a paved asphalt pathway between Pella and Lake Red Rock. The trail passes through mature timbered areas, restored prairies, pine plantations, and offers fantastic views of Lake Red Rock.

Explore Downtown Pella

Stroll through downtown Pella, where brick streets, old-world storefronts, and the famous Vermeer Windmill feel like stepping into Europe. Grab a fresh Dutch letter from one of several bakeries, explore local shops, or tour the Historical Village.

Where to Stay
Horn’s Ferry Hideaway offers cozy cabins right by Lake Red Rock. We had a peaceful stay with plenty of room for our family.
